Tips for a pro-looking photo+
1
Prop your phone, then step back
The #1 reason passport selfies look off is the wide-angle front camera at arm's length — it bloats your nose and pinches your temples. Lean the phone against a book, a glass, or a windowsill at chest height and step 3-4 feet away. Then tap Hands-free in the camera and hold still — it auto-captures with a 3-second countdown.
2
Or have someone hold it
If a friend's around, the rear camera always looks more natural than the front. Hand them the phone, ask them to stand 3-4 feet back at your eye level.
3
Use side lighting, not overhead
Stand near a window with the light hitting one side of your face. Avoid overhead lights and ceiling fans — they make raccoon-eye shadows. No window? Face a bright wall and stand 3-4 feet from it so the light bounces evenly.
4
Plain wall, no clutter
A white, beige, or light grey wall works best. We replace the background automatically but a clean wall to start gives better hair edges.
5
Shoulders square, head straight
Face the camera dead-on — both shoulders the same distance from the lens. Don't tilt your head. Imagine a string pulling the top of your head straight up.
6
Neutral expression, mouth closed
No smile. No teeth. Mouth fully closed, jaw relaxed. Looking directly at the lens.
7
No glasses, hats, headphones, or hoods
Remove anything covering your face or shadowing your eyes. AirPods count.
Use bright, even light. Face the camera, no glasses or hat.
